Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
On Tuesday, the police arrested 36 people in connection with the violence in West Bengal's Rishra and disrupted train services that lasted for several hours.
The unrest has led to a political uproar, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president, Sukant Majumdar, announcing a sit-in to demand action against the attack on the MLA and arrest of innocent BJP workers. However, the police did not allow him to stage the protest, accusing him of violating Section 144, which is in place in the area.
The Leader of the Opposition, Shubhendu Adhikari, also demanded the deployment of Central Forces in the area. He criticized the state government for its lack of action in containing the violence, saying that the administration is enjoying a beach holiday while Risda burns.
The violence on Monday night resulted in the suspension of local and express train services on the Howrah-Bardhaman line due to stone pelting and shelling near Risda railway station. The situation has calmed down since Tuesday morning, and the police have been patrolling the area. However, the administration is trying to keep the situation normal, and Section 144 remains in place. The police have also stopped internet services in the area.
Small shops in the area did not open in the morning, causing inconvenience to the residents. The additional police force has been deployed since Tuesday morning, including the Chandan Nagar Police, Hooghly Rural Police, and Howrah City Police, to restore normalcy.
The authorities have resumed train services, but the concerns of the common people have not yet been fully addressed. The unrest in Risda has triggered political tensions in West Bengal, with opposition parties blaming the ruling party for failing to maintain law and order in the state.
